After a refreshing week off for Mardi Gras, it was time to get back to work in my Interventions in Biomedical Sciences class. This week, we officially began working on our Capstone Presentations. I chose to focus my presentation on the evaluation and treatment of burns in the emergency department, particularly with recell autologous skin-grafting. I recently completed an outline in which I organized my ideas into two main topics supplemented with online sources and imaging. Starting next week, I will be organizing my information into the first draft of my presentation.
This Tuesday, I gave my outreach to the Sports Medicine classes. I gave them all a presentation that detailed general information on fractures and how they are treated in the emergency department. After the presentation, I ran a lab in which I allowed them each to use a cast saw to remove a plaster cast. I will be going into more detail on this in a later blog post so be on the lookout for that! Also this week, I got to see my classmates present their outreach projects. Josh chose Radiology and used a UV light to simulate how X-Rays function. Garrett discussed how medical professionals may use AI effectively. Ria discussed the function of the different types of teeth.
We also completed a lesson on color blindness. We learned about how different animals perceive the world through color. This was very fascinating! We also learned about the cones of the eye and how a cone shifted on the light spectrum can affect how an individual sees color. We also took a color blindness test and learned how the different types of color blindness are diagnosed.
We ended the week with a viewing of Something the Lord Made in line with black history month. We haven't finished the movie yet, so next week I will update on how I felt about the movie. So far, I love it! This was a busy week in Biomed, and I expect many more to come leading up to our final presentation.
