It has been yet another exciting week in my Interventions in Biomedical Sciences class! We started off the week by continuing with our unit on Braille. Using the knowledge we gained in class, we collaborated to make two decks of playing cards with braille lettering. These cards will be donated to blind children to help them reinforce their braille and have fun playing with friends! This was a difficult process to learn, but after we got the hang of it, the whole process was actually very fun.
We had a lot of independent study time this week in which we were able to work on our 3D eye model project. For this project, we had to learn all about the different anatomical structures of the eye and make sketches that detail them. Once we completed this, we had to come up with our own medium to create a three dimensional model that details some of the structures of the eye. I built my eye using clay!
We ended the week with a visit from Mobile County Commissioner, Connie Hudson. She was a brilliant and attentive guest who was clearly dedicated to improving STEM education. She was very complimentary of the St Luke's Biomedical Sciences program. We also got to see some more special guests: the 6th graders! We were able to teach them all how to use our telehealth robot and of course show the benefits of having those machines all around the world! They all got to drive the robot and experience a mock clinical scenario run by us seniors.
This week reminded me of just how grateful I am for this program at St. Luke's. Getting to be able to talk about the program to Mrs. Hudson and the Sixth Graders reminded me of all the great things Biomed has to offer. Not only this, but I also was accepted into the Pre-Med Scholar's Program at Spring Hill thanks to the help of all the lessons I have learned throughout the years in Biomed! I am sad to have to see the program go in a few months, but I am very excited for the next chapter of my life.
