This was yet another fascinating week in Biomed! We started the week off performing telehealth clinical labs using Luke, one of our telehealth robots! Using devices like Luke, medical professionals can connect with patients across the globe in real time, increasing the efficiency and quality of healthcare all over the world. We used Luke to perform a simulation clinical health scenario. Each of us had to create a patient profile, with a patient facing an illness typically seen in an urgent-care type of setting. We then had to embody the patient and act on their behalf. I acted as a 7-year-old female presenting shortness of breath, fever, and lack of appetite. My fellow classmate then had to act as the physician, evaluate my symptoms, and order "tests" for various illnesses. My classmate correctly guessed that I had Covid-19. We all got to play each role; I correctly deduced that my classmate had strep throat. learned a lot about the different ways in which doctors connect with their patients, and it was very fun to evaluate my own patients even if it was fake.
In preparation for the upcoming presentations, we began doing research on different types of presentation software. We each were assigned a different website to research and create a presentation on. I attempted to use Flowvella for my presentation software, but the site crashed and deleted the entire presentation I had spent over an hour making. My classmates found some interesting sites though. I really enjoyed learning about Emaze and Prezi because both of these sites had interesting animations. I can definitely see myself using either of these sites for my presentation in the spring.
The last thing we did this week was an introduction to Braille. We learned about Louis Braille, the inventor of Braille. I did not know that he was blind himself! We watched a short video that gave a brief overview of Braille, then we practiced a bit on the screen. This was incredibly fascinating. Next week, we will be making playing cards in Braille to donate. I am beyond excited that we can use our education to reach out for good in the community!
