This past week, my fundamentals in biomedical sciences (II) class was visited by Dr. Cathleen Forester, Director Coastal Alabama Community College's Veterinary Technician program. She came to discuss with us some facts about the field of veterinary medicine and some specialties of the one can have under its "umbrella".
She began with giving us some facts about Veterinary Medicine. The field of veterinary medicine comes with a lot of variety. A vet would need to know all about the different anatomies of many different species. This is quite different from a human doctor, who would likely only have a deep knowledge of one part of the HUMAN body much less the full anatomy of various species. A Veterinary Technician is the equivalent to our typical nurse in a human medicine setting. Since animals are unable to speak, physical exams, observational skills, and technology are required to make a prognosis. Contrary to popular belief, veterinary medicine requires a lot of human interactions because pets come with owners! It is important for Vet Techs to know how to hold animals too. For example, if you hold a rabbit wrong they can kick themselves hard enough to paralyze themselves. It is important for those in this field to use proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in order to avoid certain Zoonotic Diseases, diseases spread from animals to humans. Finally, we got to look at some simulation limbs used to practice finding veins on furry animals!
This was an interesting presentation, and I learned a lot of new facts about veterinary medicine!
