This past Monday, January 9, our Fundamentals in Biomedical Science (II) class was visited by Mr. Jones from the Mobile County Health Department to discuss the severity of vaping and tobacco use.
The teen age group is the number one base of the vape company's business. High School students are drawn into the product through meticulous advertising tricks. Some companies insist that their products contain non harmful ingredients such as nicotine, which is far from the truth. These companies also package their products like candy, often even paying to have them placed near candy displays in gas stations. As more kids become addicted to these products, peer pressure influences their friends to become addicted as well, resulting in a downward spiral. This makes sense as 90% of tobacco users start by 18, and 98% start by 26.
Vaping can cause harmful effects to both yourself and those around you. Vaping/tobacco use can cause cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung disease, diabetes, COPD, and more. People can also contract these diseases second hand and third hand, making it a duty of parents to refrain from vaping/tobacco use so as to not harm their kids. It is also important to note that children look up to their parents, so if parents are putting drugs in their bodies, children often do too. This type of drug use can also negative effect users physically, mentally, financially (drugs cost money!, and socially
Mr. Jones wants us all to remember that we are in charge of “our own business” and not to let others try to “run our business”. He means that he wants us not to let others influence our decisions. After all, you can’ t get addicted to drugs if you don’t start them. He ended his speech by telling us to remember to pursue our goals no matter how difficult because it will be worth it in the end.
I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Jones’s speech. He was very informative, interesting, and hilarious!
