This past Wednesday, March 9, Respiratory Therapist April Sexton visited our Fundamentals in Biomedical Sciences Class. She began by speaking about how she entered the field. She said she had a plan to pursue physical therapy, but she quickly learned that wasn't her path. She loved working with babies and as she explored careers, she became fascinated with respiratory therapy. Now she works at USA hospital as a NICU respiratory therapist.
Next, she showed us a video all about respiratory therapy as a career. Respiratory therapists talked about the rewards of the job. They loved how it was a fast paced and dynamic job. Things are never boring and technology in the field advances everyday (now because of the pandemic especially!).
Lastly she went over how to intubate a patient. Various Equipment is needed for intubation:
- laryngoscope
-blades (MacIntosh- curved and Miller-straight)
-endotracheal tubes (fit to size of patient)
-lubricabe
-10-ml syringe
-oxygen and manual bag valve mask
-suction appartus
-stethoscope
-sterile gloves and goggles
-CO2 dector
-orpharyngeal airway
We actually got to try an intubation on a fake baby patient!
I greatly enjoyed Mrs. Sexton's presentation today and learning about a career field that I was not familiar with!
