We had a busy week in Biomed! We began this week by continuing on our work in our Field of Interest. We were given our mentor agreements and began discussions about who we might be reaching out to in hopes of securing them as a mentor. We started to put together questions that we might choose to ask our mentors once we meet with them for the first time. We also put together a spreadsheet to organize contact information about the medical personnel we may meet in our future endeavors. Lastly, we continued in our research about our field of interest, this week focusing on procedures in the field.
On Thursday, we were given an excellent opportunity of receiving a highly individualized tour of Spring Hill College (SHC), a local liberal arts college with excellent medical programs. We began our day with a detailed tour of the college, including dorms, classrooms, and many other facilities. SHC is an incredibly historical college, being founded in 1830, so it was incredibly fascinating to walk around the campus and experience the influence of centuries on this campus. Next, we got to sit in on a nursing lecture for half an hour. I learned a lot about how chemotherapy is administered and other interesting information. We then got to eat lunch in their "Badger Caf" (I quite enjoyed the pizza). After this, we got to speak with Dr. Fox, a professor and Pre-Health advisor at SHC. I learned a lot about the process and requirements for medical school applications. She also gave us a fun lesson on Dendrites! We then went back to the nursing building and got to participate in a Lab and get a tour of their simulation labs. In the simulation labs, they had two high fidelity mannequins. These mannequins are absolutely incredible with the capabilities of having a pulse and blood pressure, talking about symptoms, functioning eyes, and much more! One of the mannequins could even give birth! They also had other low and mid-fidelity mannequins with less capabilities as the high-fidelity mannequins, but they were still fascinating! These simulation labs are to create low-stress environments for nursing students to experience real-life scenarios. Lastly we got to have a short skills labs with one of the nursing professors. She taught us about sterile glove application. This was great because we had learned about this just last week! She also showed us some games she uses in her classroom to test her students knowledge on certain projects. We also got to speak with former St. Luke's students about their experience at SHC. It was good to catch up with them and hear about how St. Luke's prepared them.
This was such a fun and informative week in Biomed. I greatly enjoyed our trip to SHC and I can definitely see myself on their campus or one similar to SHC. I liked the small class sizes at SHC, as I feel I could benefit from more individualized learning.
