This week, September 18-September 22, my Interventions in Biomedical Sciences class continued our focus on individualized research and preparations for our upcoming research paper. We made a set of 10 index cards detailing general information relating to our Field of Interest. I learned a lot of valuable information such as the effects of overcrowding on the function of an Emergency Department and the importance of triage in the treatment of patients in these crowded moments. I also completed a discussion post about the value in the use of Google Scholar when conducting research. Google Scholar is a search engine that produces more advanced search results such as scholarly articles. Google Scholar will serve to be an excellent resource while conducting research for our upcoming research papers.
For our skills lab this week, we learned about sterile glove application. We were given a package with one set of surgical gloves. We had to open the package carefully to keep the sterile field clean. We had to apply the gloves without contaminating the outside of the glove with our own germs. There was certainly a learning curve to this! After a lot of practice, I started to get more confident in applying gloves without accidently contaminating anything. We are now working on putting together an instructional video demonstrating our new skill.
This was a very informative week for our class! I am excited for our upcoming field trip to Spring Hill College as well.
