Interventions Week 1

The week of August 14th began the first full days in the St. Luke's Biomed capstone course, Interventions. We spent much of the week learning classroom procedures and discussing the future activities we will participate in over the course of the year. This year will have a lot of time for individual study. We will have the opportunity to choose a topic relating to the medical field and spend the year deep diving into that topic. We will shadow a mentor in our field of interest to gain hands-on experience in that field as well as craft a research paper and presentation on our topic. We also will do an outreach project to teach others about the field as well.

One of the activities that we will do over the course of this year will be the ongoing game of Balderdash. In this game, Mrs McCleery. our teacher, will put up a medical term on the board. We will then guess what the word means by writing our guess on a notecard. Mrs McCleery will then read our answers and award three points to the students who get the answer correctly. She will then read all of the incorrect answers aloud along with one correct answer. The class (minus those who originally got the answer correct) will then vote on the answer they believe to be true. If you guess the answer correctly, you will receive two points. Also, if your answer is guessed by another member of the class, you will receive a point as well. The points will be recorded over the course of a year and may be used as bonus points on future assignments.

On Thursday, we participated in a Surgical Knot tying lab. We watched a video from the University of Connecticut on how to create a square surgical knot with two hands. We practiced our knot tying on our shoe laces. It was quite difficult at first, but after much practice, I was able to tie the knot quickly and with my eyes closed!

Finally, Today, Friday August 18th, we played an icebreaker game called "How they see me". We put together a collection of images about how different people see us, and our classmates guessed who they thought the person was from the image. Since there are only five of us in the class, this game was quite easy!

This was a very fun week, and I am excited to see what the future holds for this class! I have already chosen my topic for the year too, Emergency Medicine.
