Forensics Week-Day 5

This past Friday, April 29, our Fundamentals in Biomedical Sciences Class concluded the activities of Forensics Week with a final presentation! The day before, we were split into groups to examine a wreck scene of an traffic homicide. We were tasked with collecting evidence to determine who was driving the car that caused the accident. We then had to gather our evidence and present our findings to Mr. Garside and Officer Hixon.

Our scene included one car. There was one deceased victim in the windshield of the car. We immediately concluded that we were looking at a head on collision (a hasty conclusion that would later come back to bite us!). There was one living victim. She claimed to not remember anything and was refusing medical treatment. We quickly found her to be suspicious because she told us she would not tell us who was driving the car without any prompting questions from us. We found various pieces of potential evidence:

  • Car make

  • Cell phone

  • License plate

  • Boots (Size 11)

  • Receipt with beer/wine on it

  • Food all over front of car

  • Blood on Airbags and Door Handle

  • Seat belts

    • Passenger not wearing seat belt, driver was

I made a final conclusion that the confused victim was a major person of interest, but I believe there is a large possibility that the driver fled the scene. I would finally deduce that we needed the results of the evidence to make a final conclusion. Our group did a good job at finding our evidence, but we missed on glaring issue. The deceased victim was actually a pedestrian hit, not a passenger in the car. This activity was informative, challenging, and very fun! I hope we can try something like this again!
