Forensics Week-Day 4

This past Thursday, April 28, our Fundamentals in Biomedical Sciences Class was given the opportunity to partake in a hands-on-activity related to the information we learned this week about forensic evidence and traffic related homicide!

In this activity we were split up into groups. My group mates were Maggie Blasingame, Avery VanAlstine, and Melanie Davis. We were tasked with examining a crash scene, collecting evidence, and attempting to figure out who was the driver of the affected vehicle. Our crash scene included one car. There was one deceased victim in the windshield. Sitting off to the side of the crash scene was one injured person. She claimed to not remember anything, and even without questioning, told us she would not tell us who was driving the car. She had a bleeding head injury and was refusing medical treatment. I decided right away that she likely was not driving, but she was certainly hiding information from us. We found lots of evidence; some of this we determined we would like to be "forensically analyzed" (of course, we couldn't actually have it tested). These included bloodstains on the door handle, airbags, and seat belt, a cell phone, a receipt for alcohol, and food all over the front of the car. We only had ten minutes to search the vehicle before we had to go back inside to discuss our findings. Our group had to come up with a presentation in which we displayed our evidence and determined who we believed the driver to be. We will present our findings the next day, Friday, April 29.

I thought this activity was incredibly informative and helpful! Although this did make me realize I want nothing to do with this career field, I still have enjoyed my time this week!.
