This past Monday, March 27, my fundamentals in biomedical sciences (II) class was visited by Mr. Glenn Garside to kick off the highly anticipated Forensics Week. During Forensics Week, our class gets the opportunity to hear from both former and active members of the local law enforcement and learn about how their work ties into the medical field. This overlap is found in forensics, where medical personnel can study and test items/body parts to be used to solve crimes.
Forensic Evidence is any item considered to be of evidentiary value that can be examined by a person of specialized training and opinion gathered about it. There are many different things that can be used as forensic evidence including, but not limited to:
Ballistics
Forensic pathology
Digital Forensics
Bite Marks
Tool Marks
Tire-Shoe Markers
Polygraphs
Documents
Fire/Arson
There are also many different types of specialized fields in forensic science including, but not limited to:
Engineering
Medical Examiner/Pathologist
Linguistics
Psychologist
Anthropology
Botany
When studying forensics it is important to know: WHY+WHO=HOW. Forensic Evidence is not found in every case though! Those obtaining forensic evidence must remember to think as four different people: The Detective, The Suspect, the Prosecutor, and the Defense Attorney.
We ended the presentation learning about types of gunshot wounds and the injuries to which they inflict.
I enjoyed the presentation as a kickoff to this fun week. I am thoroughly excited to see where this week takes us!
